However, although our "off the shelf" steam showers are truly great, they of course, do not suit all situations and design requirements. Accordingly in this section, you'll find all the information, steam room generators, accessories and other product details needed to add a steam function to an existing or new shower, or to a larger steam enclosure or bespoke steam room at home, in a Gym, Spa, Hotel or Sports Centre.

Steam room generators, our pre-installation notes....
OVERVIEW:- Provided your existing shower is water tight, there's no huge mystery about whether or not you can add the steam function. After all, steam is simply boiled water and once this evaporates, it just turns back into water droplets and will exit via the waste in the same way the shower water does. Of course, there will be some structural alterations required in making your existing shower "steam proof" and you'll find details of this in the next section.
STEAM PROOF:- One misconception is that the shower pods doors need to be totally gap free. Sure, more well fitted and sealed doors are better but a few millimeter spaces here and there will not matter as steam escapes when the doors are opened anyway. Any space between the top of the shower screen and ceiling, can be enclosed with stud work. This plus all shower walls and the ceiling - which needs to be slightly sloping, must be fully non-porous. Accordingly, ceramic tiles and marble, shower board and acrylic are all fine.
GENERATOR SIZE:- The smallest 3kw steam generator HomeFit system will likely suit many existing showers provided the interior space is less than 120 cubic feet. The ideal shower tray to ceiling height is 7ft [2133mm], but should be no more than 8ft. Therefore a small 3ft x 3ft x 7ft [914mm x 914mm x 2133mm] shower equals 63 cubic ft and a larger 5ft x 3ft x 7ft [1524mm x 914mm x 2133mm] one equals 105 cubic feet thus a 3kw steam generator will be fine. This size unit is fitted in most of our free standing steam showers with one of the largest here, being just under 6ft x 3ft x 7ft [Approx. 1700mm x 900mm x 2170mm] Generator capacity is measured in cubic feet: Metric Converter. OVERVIEW:- The introductory notes in this section, are intended for when a new shower is being installed, where the total internal size is going to be less than 120 cubic feet. This is the capacity of our smallest steam generators, so perhaps first use the Metric Converter here, to help calculate length x width x height of your planned shower and determine if this will suffice or, if a larger steam unit is required. As with our existing shower notes above, some structural alterations are required in making your new shower installation "steam proof" and you'll find details of this in the next section.
STEAM PROOF:- As you are planing to install a new shower, this is a great opportunity for selecting shower screens and doors that are well fitting with good door seals. The area of the room where the shower will go, can be be constructed in advance so that the optimum install for steam use can be achieved. In particular, the ceiling can be lowered here to a height of circa 7ft [2133mm], with the exact dimension being the screen height + the height from the floor to the top of the shower tray. The ceiling should slope at around 3/4 inch per foot and running away from the sitting area. This will prevent water droplets from the steam, dripping on to users.
WATER & STEAM:- Whether you plan to have a shower tray or wet room style tiled floor, all walls, floor and ceiling need to steam and water proof. With most nominal sized showers, tiles will likely be the main choice and whilst brick or block walls are fine, any that are constructed of plasterboard or fibreboard are best covered in marine ply first. Same goes for the ceiling and it is recommended that all areas are then covered with a polythene membrane first, prior to tiling. In the previous notes we mentioned that the steam generator is sited outside the shower. This can be fitted into an existing or bespoke cupboard, or above within an attic space provided this is well insulated.
WHAT ELSE? - As previously mentioned, for the smaller size of new shower installation the 3kw HomeFit Steam Generator System will be adequate. This is Bluetooth enabled thus permitting you to stream all your favourite sounds whilst enjoying a steam sessions or alternatively use the FM radio. OVERVIEW:- Whilst we suggest you read through all the other steam related details above, this particular section focuses upon building a larger steam enclosure within a bathroom area or even a large separate steam room in your property. For this, you will require one of the heavy duty steam generators we feature below which again, will depend on the total cubic feet space of the intended steam room area. As with our existing and new steam shower notes above, some structural alterations are required in making your new steam room installation both steam & water proof.
STEAM PROOF:- Whether you're planning a large enclosed area across the entire width of your bathroom or have a completely separate room for your oasis, the steam and water proofing requirements are much the same. As per our previous notes, circa 7 feet [2133mm] is the optimum height for the steam to be effective. Brick or block walls are fine, with marine ply providing a solid backing on to plasterboard walls and ceiling. Final interior finish needs to be non-porous, with tiles and marble etc being ideal, but ask your building supply centre for a proper vapor barrier to install before tiling. A bespoke glass steam room door and frame can be acquired - see below and whether you intend to install a shower or not, a floor drain will be required.
HEAVY DUTY SIZE:- The heavy duty Signature steam generators come in the following sizes - 7.5kw, 10.5kw, 12kw, 15kw and 18kw The 7.7kw has a 250 - 325 cubic ft capacity; the 12.5kw has a 475 - 575 cubic ft capacity and the 18kw a 700 - 875 cubic ft capacity. [See the Online Calculator for other sizes] As a guide and with a 7ft ceiling height, the heavy duty 12kw model would suit a room size of up to 10 ft x 7ft [3048mm x 2133mm]. Use the Metric Converter and Online Calculator to determine your ideal size steam unit. Note that having a steam generator that is too powerful for your room space, is as ineffective as one that is not powerful enough. The 7.5kw and 10.5kw can be used for both domestic and commercial use as the unit can be connected to 220/240v or commercially in to 3 phase. Insignia's "Signature" steam room generators...
There are many advantages to the Insignia "Signature" series of commercial and home steam generators, including well-designed structures, steady performance, and ease of installation. With the "Signature" steam room system, you can enjoy a soothing experience of warm and invigorating steam that deeply soothes your senses, rejuvenates tired skin and leaves you feeling glowing and refreshed. The "Signature" range is ideally suited to both professional home and commercial installations. Considering the nature of these heavy-duty units, we recommend only using qualified electricians and plumbers throughout the installation process. This should never be attempted on your own. It is extremely imperative that you read all instructions carefully and retain them for future reference in order to ensure successful operation and maintenance.
Steam generators, general usage safety advice and tips....
Steam generators should not be used by individuals with reduced physical, sensory, or mental abilities, children under 16, or those with insufficient experience or knowledge. They shouldn't use an appliance without supervision or instruction from someone responsible for their safety. It is imperative to supervise children to ensure that they don't play with the generator or controls, and always check the steam room before using it. It is certainly advisable not to smoke or drink alcohol in a steam room and in commercial premises, this is certainly not permitted.
It is critical that you leave the steam room as soon as possible if you feel unwell or uncomfortable. Steam rooms should be ventilated with a fan. Steam generators heat the air in steam rooms. Never undertake any changes to the system by yourself, unless under the help or guidance of someone who can be responsible for users' safety. Steam generator mains power and general water supply should be turned off when the steam room is not in use for a prolonged period of time.
Generator installation safely advice and tips...
It is essential that the water supply valve is easily accessible if the steam generator is installed at an inaccessible location. On the power supply, a GFCI must be installed, and the power wire, fuse, and breaker must meet the requirements of Table 2 in the "Signature" installation manual. Pressures up to 0.8MPa (8kg/cm2) can be handled by the solenoid valve. You may need to install a pressure reducing valve or turn down the inlet slightly to protect the solenoid valve from excessive water pressure.
Installing saddle-backed or needle valves at the inlet is not recommended. Ensure that the pipe is dredged and cleaned prior to installation. There must be no obstructions or blends in the pipe, as this will negatively affect steam and condensate flow. If the steam pipelines aren't installed at a slight angle, condensate will not be able to flow back to the generator or steam head. Ensure that the arrow is pointing upward at an accessible point, otherwise do not switch them on.
Copper or stainless steel pipes must be used for the steam pipeline; plastic or acrylic pipes cannot withstand temperatures exceeding 150°C. In order to prevent steam leaks and to protect the generator and its customers, all inlets and apertures should be sealed. Don't drain water from the water tank into the steam room as this can cause serious scalding and damage to the room. Before sealing the wall, all inlet water pipes and steam pipelines should be built in accordance with the National Standard.
Generator models, the parameters and dimensions....
Refer to Notes 5.1 in the installation guide......the rated power is measured under single phase 230V, hence the actual operational power under single phase 215-240V, 50/60Hz, or three phases 380-415V, 50/60Hz may differ to the rated value. | With 3KW and 4KW generators, can only be under 215-240V single phase. Be aware the earth wire must not be less than 1.5mm2. | Steam generator sizes of 4.5KW to 8KW, can be 215-240V single phase or 380-415V three phase. As before, please note the earth wire should not be less than 1.5mm2, and the live wire and null wire should not be less than 2.5mm2. | Commercial steam generators more than 9KW capacity, may only be installed by 380-415V three phase supply. With this type of steam rooom installation, the earth wire must not be less than 2.5mm2, with the live and null wires not being less than 4.0mm2.
How to select the correct KW size steam generator.....
Although we've covered this in part previously, here are a few additional notes on calculating and selecting the correct size KW steam generator for your installation. This is a two-step process and the first step is to measure your steam room dimensions in cubic metres. That's the Length x Width x Height in meters....if you're measuring in linear feet and inches, 1 Feet = 0.3048 metre and 1 Inch = 0.0254 metres. So a room that is 2 metres x 1.5 metres x 1.8 metres would have a cubic metre size of 5.4.
The second step is to check and verify the construction materials of your steam room. Acrylic walls = no additional calculation, just the cubic metre room size; Ceramic Tiles = 1.30 x the cubic metre room size; Glass Blocks or Glass Tiles = 1.35 x the cubic metre room size; Porcelain Tiles = 1.6 x the cubic metre room size; Natural Stone < 1/2 inch thick = 2.00 x the cubic metre room size; Natural Stone > 1/2 inch thick = 2.25 x the cubic metre room size. As in the example above, a 5.4 cubic metre room with Ceramic Tile walls, would have a measurement of 1.30 x 5.4 = 7.02...which per the chart in Notes 5.1 in the installation guide would equate to a 7.5KW steam generator.
3KW = 2 - 3 Cubic Metres | 7.5KW = 4 - 9 Cubic Metres | 10.5KW = 9 - 11 Cubic Metres | 12KW = 11 - 14 Cubic Metres | 15KW = 14 - 16 Cubic Metres | 18KW = 16 - 22 Cubic Metres. Steam generator selection and size are as critical to achieving comfort and relaxation as the design of the steam room itself. A careful check should be performed on the power supply and circuit protector to ensure they match the generator's parameters.
